I am Susan Toms (how “Tomi” was derived) Berry.  I was born and raised in Montclair, NJ and currently live outside of Atlanta, GA.  I have always had a love of music, singing and harmony.  When I was young, I would mimick and copy the vocal styles of Diana Ross and all of the Supremes.  I was exposed at a young age to R&B/Soul, Motown, rock and jazz growing up in a blended household of multiple generations, all of whom had a love of music as well.  There was rarely a time when a radio or record player wasn’t turned on at my house!  I was also very interested in the spirituals, gospel sounds and harmonies I heard in our church and sang in several choirs there.

I received classical training in voice while attending Lafayette College in Easton, PA, where I began to understand the nuances of proper breathing techniques in different “voices” and creating varied tones.  I constantly practiced these techniques while singing in the college choir, madrigal singers chorus and  performing with a band of co-eds working the campus frat house party scene on weekends. I also had the honor of being the college’s first vocal soloist for the jazz band.  I continue to hone these tools and share my knowledge with others related to voice.

In addition to Diana Ross, Mary Wilson, Florence Ballard and Cindy Birdsong, some of the other female vocalists I admire are include, Rachelle Ferrell, Oleta Adams, Anita Baker, Barbra Streisand, Minnie Ripperton, Aretha Franklin, Karen Carpenter, Eva Cassidy, Diane Reeves, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Billie Holiday, Mahalia Jackson, Roberta Flack, Diane Shure, Yolanda Adams, Patti Austin and many others.

My professional career has been in corporate training over the last 16 years and the topic that I enjoy delivering most is Presentation Skills where I work with participants to improve their platform skills in delivering meetings, training sessions and public speaking.  I am now taking these skills to performers looking to improve their on-stage presentation and engage their audiences through utilizing similar techniques of public speaking.

If you are looking to improve your stage presence, give me a call at 678 524-5132 or send a note to me at tomisings@comf5.com! Keep it in tune…

  1. Tomi,

I look forward to sitting in on the event this Sunday. Congratulations on taking another step with the passion that you have for music.

    All the best,

    • Thank you so much Don. You are very industrious as I hadn’t put out my web blog info yet. I still have some adjustments to make but I guess I’d better get movin’ on that sooner than later. I appreciate your support and will see you in the chat room…
